Severe Brisbane Storms Bring Hail: Damage Buildings, Flip Planes
6:52pm AEST Thursday 27 November 2014
Severe storms with hailstones as large as cricket balls and winds exceeding 140kph have hit Brisbane and South East Queensland, causing extensive damage to property and flipping planes at Archerfield Airport.
Trees were brought down and around 85,000 homes and businesses have lost powers.
The storms hit the Brisbane CBD just before 5pm, extensively damaging buildings and smashing car windows.
Traffic was brought to a standstill and drivers were caught with nowhere to go to avoid the 8cm sized hail stones.
Torrential rain caused some streets to flood and train services to be suspended.
Several cars at Bowen Hills went underwater.
The State Emergency Service has already received over 700 calls for help.
