Australia's first saint canonised
9:14pm AEST Sunday 17 October 2010
Saint Mary of the Cross has been canonised in Rome by Pope Benedict XVI, making her Australia's first saint.
Five other saints were also recognised today.
Approximately 8000 Australians gathered in St Peter's Square to watch the canonisation and mass.
Thousands of people, including politicians, gathered at sites around Australia for the occasion.
In Adelaide, where Sister Mary MacKillop lived for many years, a procession of thousands of pilgrims made their way from the Sisters of St Joseph's Convent at Kensington to Victoria Square.
It has taken 85 years for Mary to become a saint, with a second miracle attributed to her on 19 December 2009.
St Mary MacKillop was born in Fitzroy on 15 January 1842. She founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, several schools and institutions.
