New Brisbane rail tunnel under consideration
3:17pm AEST Wednesday 24 March 2010
A new $8bn rail tunnel and track is under consideration for Brisbane.
The proposal is for a new 19 kilometre railway track and tunnel to be constructed from Sailsbury to Wooloowin.
The 'Cross River Rail' tunnel link would go through the Brisbane CBD.
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said during Parliament today that "[The] project is absolutely critical to managing growth in the whole of the south-east region."
Ms Bligh said the project will enable the suburban network to reach out to places such as Kippa-Ring and the western corridor of Brisbane.
If the project proceeds, it may be completed by 2016.
