Julia Gillard is the new Prime Minister

10:44am AEST Thursday 24 June 2010

Julia Gillard has become Australia's first female prime minister.

Kevin Rudd decided not to contest the leadership ballot that was held at 9am this morning.

Wayne Swan was elected as Deputy Prime Minister.

Julia Gillard addressed the media at 11:59am this morning.

"It's with the greatest humility, resolve and enthusiasm that I sought the endorsement of my colleagues to be the Labour leader and leader of this country," Ms Gillard said.

"I am truly honoured to lead this country that I love."

"I will lead a strong and responsible government that will take control of our future."

"I will dedicate my abilities to what I believe in."

Julia Gillard stated that she will ask the Governor General to call a general election over coming months, and acknowledged that the Australian public did not elect her as Prime Minister.

"Between now and this election I seek the [Australian public's] consideration and support," she said.

Julia Gillard said that she will not move into the Lodge unless she wins a general election.

"I will continue to live where I live now, and I will present and the next election, and we'll see what happens at the next election," she said.

The House of Representatives sittings will be suspended to allow Gillard to be sworn in.

The ceremony took place this afternoon.

Gillard, 48, becomes Australia's 27th Prime Minister.

Kevin Rudd addressed the Australian public in a press conference this morning, accompanied by his wife and children.

"I have given it my absolute best," Mr Rudd said.

"I thank the Australian people who put their trust in me."

Kevin Rudd said he will be recontesting his seat in the next election.

Julia Gillard described Kevin Rudd as "a man of remarkable achievement".
